Without wanting to appear (very) rude, (unduly) snide or (needlessly) attacking, it looks to me like you've already really made up your mind and -want- to spend money on a new bit of kit. It looks like the Drobo S is touting 50% faster than Firewire 800. Mostly music and pictures and emulator backups. I'm already up to 2x 2TB drives and 2x 1TB drives with 40% empty space). Unless you -really- need the speed, what's wrong with your old original Drobo and four nice new 2TB drives (they're down below $80 a pop these days)? It isn't as if you -need- speed for a NAS.

The speed of Drobo is lacklustre, but even at 75Mbytes/second, which is about as fast as you can reliably get on 'standard' data over Gigabit links, it's still going to take four fifths of 'forever' to do a full backup These days it's a toss-up if home grown WHS or other NAS solutions are 'better' than Drobo, QNAP or the NetGear offerings it really depends upon what your usage is like, what your expectations are, and how -lucky- you are with hardware (most particularly, hard disks). On topic, I lusted after Drobo, back when I was looking at a NAS solution around 2008 I elected to roll my own, which fell in a particularly dank hole and sat there doing nothing for three years.

Check out their data storage forum has a heap of posts, including a long thread on WHS. So saying, I hear a lot of good things about Windows Home Server and then I hear that Microsoft has stopped making it, or more correctly, 'broken' the bits of WHS that made it nice the ability to just add more hard disks to the array. (if I could 'like' this post of Molo's, I would!) The unusual sound of Molo "liking" something.

I have yet to use any NAS appliances that worked as well as a Windows Server 2008 R2 box with some big drives in it
